For better or for worse? I say for worse.
Firstly, pictures of skinny models wearing the hottest new fashion on the catwalk, what is it imposing? These images of under weight runway models as tiny as a size zero, have a
harmful effect on young girls who are at a normal and healthy weight of a size eight to fourteen all over the globe. Young women are getting the impression that being skinny is the new look from seeing the models who walk down the runway. No wonder why Charlotte Carter a runway model size zero was banned from London Fashion Week because of her "unhealthy appearence", it's about time someone realised what this look is doing to young women all over the world. When ever I see a model wearing a beautiful garment I instantly think to myself, "If I was that thin it would look good on me too" and I wouldn't be suprised if other girls like myself think that aswell. This seems to be encouraging girls to lose weight and drop to that fragile size zero. I on the other hand have accepted that i am a healthy size 10/12 and enjoy eating real food, not celery and carrot sticks. About one in a hundred adolescent girls suffer from anorexia, and in some cases with 10% of girls it can be deadly, with lack of food, or even suicide. In the past few years more males have been diagnosed with eating disorders, because with guys, it's all about being 'ripped'. Males exercise excessivly to burn off extra calories they have eaten, which is a condition called exercise bulimia.

Why do runway models have to be based around a disturbing size zero? I'm a tennis player, professional or not, tennis players come in all shapes a
nd sizes, so why can't models? Why shouldn't there be a 6ft3 model built athletically like Serena Williams? or a 5ft4 model built like Maria Sharapova. I'm 5ft6 and built athletically, I tried to get signed last year (2008) with multiple agents for modelling, but they wouldn't sign me because I'm not a size zero. It's sad and depressing that I can't have a career in modelling because I'm not and don't want to be a size zero. I know that some girls who are a size 12-14 will think when approaching a new group of people who are a lot thinner than they are, "will they accept me because I'm this size?" It's sad.

Skinny, almost anorexic seems to be the new fat in the celebrity world. The changes in
Hollywood seem to make it easily in the magazines everywhere, with titles on them such as 'Skeletal Nicole Ritchie's weight plummets again', and along with it pictures of Nicole in a "skin-tight orange dress [revealing] a concave chest and protuding hipbones."

Weight loss "rememedys" are poping up all over the internet. Anna Nicole Smith was said to have been poping pills to lose weight, and they appeared to have been working. "The Anna Nicole Smith weight loss like any responsible diet reccomends combining the pill with a healthy diet and exercise for it to be effective." Anna Nicole Smith was said to have lost nearly 60 pounds on this pill called Trimspa. In my opinion Trimspa is unnatural and an unhealthy way of dieting. It says that they reccomend "...combining the pill with a healthy diet and exercise for it to be effective." Anyone is better off having a healthy diet and exercising frequently and then there will be no need to take trimspa, because they won't have any weight to lose. Trimspa is unatural and unhealthy, I don't know how anyone can let a pill take toll of there body in losing weight. This sort of advertisement is encouraging women of all ages that "...your dream body diet pill" will make you 60 pounds lighter in such an artificial way. Though Anna Nicole Smith isn't the only drug, weight loss promoting celebritie out there. Lindsey Lohan was said to be taking Adderall, a perscription drug for ADD effected people, and Lindsey isn't. "She's taking it to lose weight." The fact that Lindsey is already so skinny, and she's taking drugs to be skinnier, this is telling young girls thats Lindsey's weight isn't skinny enough. This is encouraging the awful size zero all over the world.
Models such as the one on the right are shown promoting the fashion on the catwalk. The model shown looks disgusting, her ribs are extremley exposed, um... eat some food! Eating disorder anyone?
As for Victoria Beckham also known as Posh Spice, out of the English Pop band Spice Girls, once a normal and healthy weight has dropped from a normal sized woman to a rather tiny size in a short amount of time. Nice Victoria, your a real good role model for your fans,
not. Check the picture out on the left. You can see the difference in her face, and her collar bones that she has dropped a few sizes. She looks healthier on the left. As much as Victoria looks anorexic she admits in an interview with BBC that she is not anorexic because she eats..."no i'm not, I know that because i eat, anorexic's don't eat..." Well in my opinion you need to eat more, you're fading away to nothing!

Well in my opinion you need to eat more, you're fading away to nothing! The media is always producing cover pages of magazines saying "How to feel the best" , "Flatten your belly" or "23 ways to fake your weight". How about no, I'm comfortable with my weight and I'm not willing to change to look like someone else. Why is it that the media is always trying to change the look of everyone, if everyone changed, then we'd all look the same. It would be like living in a world of bones.
Honestly, the picture on the left made my face become grim. I could certainly say that for worse. It makes my heart hurt to see the lady standing so periolusly. I can not see beauty on her but I could see skin and bones on her. I am regrettable to saying that but to tell the truth...
ReplyDeleteHey there, I agree with you, these pictures that are being shown in magazines are disgusting all I see is bones. With the increasing number of young girls wanting to be up with the new fashion that is the only thing they see, is picture of size zero models and celebs in an unhealthy state. I feel that these pictures give young girls a bad view on themselves and their confidence seems to drop. ALOT. They force them selves into diets, which can have really bad affects on them.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me angry to see all these boney people on magazines.
What happened to curves? BRING THE CURVES BACK :)
can't wait to read the rest of your blog :)
Hey Summer first of all aren't all photos of celebrites in magazine air brushed? Asfor Posh Spice she's "All bone and no meat" For me I'm a size 10 on top and size 6-8 on my waist and yet I get called anorexic by some people. I got a friend just like me normal top but smaller waist and she gets called ano as well. I mean for crying out loud a lot of people judge other''s by their apperance. I love me for me so and you should love you for yourself yet some people tried to starve themselves to make themselves look like their idols. I think it's wrong for underweight models to be on the run way
ReplyDeleteAs long as your BMI is in check then you should be ok right?
Hey there. This has definitely become a huge issue over the past few years. It seems that as the influence of the media becomes greater, more and more young people will continue to suffer from issues regarding low self-esteem and self-worth. You only have to skim through one of the latest gossip magazines to realise that the media definitely has a tendency to blow things way out of proportion. Last year I was skimming through a gossip section and was shocked at one of the comments on Mischa Barton. Apparently she had gained a mere 2kg yet comments were being made that the weight gain had had a huge impact on her appearance. It seems that what is portrayed by the media to be a glamorous look will become the new trend for young women to follow. For example, as Oriana mentioned earlier, curves were the trend a few decades ago but now the latest fashion has taken a drastic turn. I feel this is definitely an issue that needs to be dealt with, but there is no easy solution. Really all you can do is make an attempt to control the growing influence of the media. In addition, healthy role models should be embraced so as to contribute toward a positive perspective held within society. What do you think about possible solutions?
ReplyDeleteI think nowadays a lot of people have issues with their own inner-selves...either who tries to reach a size zero, or who wears a size 26..I think eating disorders are one of the reactions our mind adoptes in response to our feelings of inadequacy in this society, that so often wants from us perfection.. And this alredy fragile scenario, yes I do think nothing should be done to incourage this tendency
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Irene, It's horrible seeing an image like this, you're right all you can see is skin and bones... there's just no meat on her. It makes you want to shove a million pies down her throat. haha
ReplyDeleteBring the curves back!! I'm so with you on that one Oriana! It is extremely harmful what these images are doing to girls. Some girls are dieting to the point where they become sick/anorexic. In some cases of serious dieting girls are missing out on all the special dietry requirements and vitamins and in doing this can lead to many different types of cancers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jasmine about girls' B.M.I's... you're definitly right there. if your BMI is pretty much bang on what it should be why would you change to look like someone else? It's like me trying to be a model, im 5ft6, athletically built, and im perfect weight for my height, I'm not going to change because of some "anorexic fashion" going around. Curves will be back sooner or later, and strutting itself down the catwalk! Go Plus Size Models! WOO!
Natalie I think for a solution, It's definitly got to start at the catwalk. As soon as the catwalk turns to size 10-14, the images young women will be seeing in magazines will instantly change, and so will their thoughts on being unhealthly thin. Because ever since the catwalk has reached a dirty size zero, the female populations weight has dropped. People need to realise and accept who they are. Everyone is different, it's time to accept.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly does have a lot to do with young girls minds and what they are thinking and how they feel about themselves, though as i said before, they just need to start accepting who they are.
ReplyDeleteIn a way the media is tellign young girls thy should look like Posh Spice or Lindsay Lohan. For me I'm tiny but I like my junk food =DD Sometimes I make fun of the models in the magazines cuz they're almost all bones and no meat. I think those girls trying to be like their celebriity idol is doing somethign harmful to their body by starving themselves and binge eating. They think it might be good for a short while but in the long run it ruins your health.
ReplyDeleteWho thinks Victoria Beckham is a walking piles of bones and not meat? XDD She's famous for beign UBER SKINNY!!! I don't know any other celebrities that are famous for being EXTREMELY skinny.. Lindsay Lohan might be. What about the Olsen Twins? One of the twins suffered anorexia a while ago I think
ReplyDeleteyeah mary-kate did! Aren't they good role models?....not... both Victoria and Mary kate and Lindsay Lohan all have young girls looking up to them and look what they're doing to themselves. Nicole Ritchie is well known for her being realy thin also... The message here is EAT SOME FOOD!!!
ReplyDeleteBad role models for young girls. Remember people.. you need food to survive.. just learn to control your portions XDD
ReplyDeletei so agree with you guys.. and im sure you's have all watched America's Next top Model.? yay the view on models are slowly changing .. i can't believe a plus sized model won it. And through the news that has given so many people around the world alot of confidence:) yay one step closer to curvy models wo0oho0o
ReplyDeleteInteresting stuff
ReplyDeleteI, like many others, found the photos imbedded pretty horrific, why someone would do that to themselves. But I do have to agree with NiouJas, we don’t know if (or how much) those photos have been edited; the magazines those come from aren’t exactly brimming with journalistic integrity. That being said, these magazines would print such trash if people didn’t buy it. If people boycotted this kind of gutter journalism then it would cease to exist.
I agree that these celebrities aren’t exactly the best role models for young girls but I would hope that none of them are, if so, then their parents really need to do a better job.
wow... those pictures were kind of distirbing...
ReplyDeletehow could anyone look at that girls ribs poking out like that and think she is beautiful??? and even worse, aspire to be like her?
I think the stars like beyonce are the ones who people should be looking up to. shes always been curvy and the media doesnt care! but with stars like mischa barton, she gains 2kg and its a huge deal?!
its really kind of pathetic.
i agree with oriana. CURVES ARE BETTER XD
i thought they were trying to stop letting size zero girls model on the catwalk? what happened to that???????
These days with all the technology that is around with photoshop and what not, it's too easy for the media to change and display images of the celebrities making them look extra thin, or making the model look extra skinny for the photo. Even so with them doing this... if they are doing it, it is stil sending out the wrong message to all of the young girls all over the world right? I'm not entirely sure whether it is to do with the parents of these celebrities as they are old enough to look afer themselves, but with the young models starting out at a young age of 15 years old and losing weight to be as skinny as size two iagree with as their parents have everything to do with it, and should be taking better care of their young girls.
ReplyDeleteOh my god. Those pictures are horrible. How can they live without food. Im on diet at the moment but i eat whatever i want to eat than i exercise. And i want to be skinny, but definitely not like them. In my opinion if you really want to get into shape, you'd better do regular exercise instead of eating carrot sticks!!
ReplyDeleteI love my food very much =3
